Tutoring FAQ's
For your first session, it’s helpful to bring your schedule (if you have one), syllabus and/or course outlines, and something you can take notes on. I’ll be asking you questions about what you’re currently studying, what things you’re good at, and what things you need more support with. If you aren’t sure how to answer those questions, you might want to bring some examples of homework or class material to show me.
If you’re wondering what a first session looks like, check out my article on that. {link to “what to expect in your first session”}
I’m here to support you, but I can’t do the work for you. To get the most out of these sessions, you will need to do the work we’ve agreed on at the end of the session.
I also can’t read your mind! If you’re struggling to understand me, finding “mental blocks” in getting stuff done, or having any other kind of difficulty, please be proactive in talking to me. I promise I don’t bite, and I won’t shame or judge you. This is a safe space, and even if your problem sounds silly, I will not make you feel bad.
I have found that students who are consistent do much better and get more out of our sessions. Weekly sessions allow you to maintain your momentum in your learning. I want to help you get to a point where you feel like you’re on track or even ahead of work, instead of only scheduling sessions when you’re behind and need to catch up. It’s a much less stressful place to be in, and that will help you learn much better.
When we schedule an as-needed session, a lot of the time gets spent catching up and helping me get a sense of where you’re currently at. That doesn’t leave us a lot of time to actually do the work. When we have regular sessions, I already know all that, and we can jump right in to what I can help you with next.
I’m happy to look over your homework after it’s already been submitted and graded. I cannot support academic dishonesty, and can’t help you work on homework that you’re going to hand in. But you can bring your homework and we can work through similar problems until you feel confident handling your homework on your own! You can read my academic honesty policy here.
